1892-1970

works | pressexhibition | bio
Richard Neutra was born in Vienna in 1892. He graduated in 1917 from the Technische Hochschule, Vienna, where he had been taught by Adolf Loos and was influenced by Otto Wagner. He worked for Erich Mendelsohn in 1921-22 and relocated to the United States in 1923 where he worked on several projects with Rudolf Schindler before establishing his own practice. Neutra created a modern regionalism for Southern California. He combined light metal frames with stucco finishes to create light effortless appearances. He was famously known for his attentiveness and needs for clients, regardless of the size of the project, in contrast to many other architects who imposed their artistic visions. His domestic architecture was a blend of art, landscape, and practical comfort. Neutra died in Wuppertal, Germany in 1970. His seminal works include the Kaufmann Desert House in Palm Springs, California (1946), and the Lovell House in Los Angeles, California (1928).
