Now working in Southern California, sculptor and ceramic artist Brad Miller captures naturally occurring forms and complex organic systems for both their physical and conceptually aesthetic properties. Miller accomplishes this in his ceramics through interlocking biomorphic shapes, spiraling surfaces, and cellular patterns. While using wood and paper as a medium, he pushes his interest in the cellular lattice and branching visualizations by incorporating a burning technique that requires, rather uniquely, a palette of butane and propane torches. Like the intricate branch work of the lungs, or the repetitive overlapping of cells, Miller's work is lyrical, transformative, and natural. "Constantly reconfiguring nature's most persistent ordering systems is central to my work. Close packing, cracking, dendritic systems, and spirals are a few of these familiar images. When systems move between order and disorder, in the dynamic middle ground of changing pattern, I find my muses." Brad Miller did his graduate studies at the University of Oregon. His work is in numerous public and private collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, Denver Art Museum, LA County Museum of Art and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian. Miller was the executive director of Anderson Ranch Arts Center from 1984 to 1992. He currently maintains a studio in Venice Beach, CA.
