  Penelope Gottlieb
b. 1952

works | pressexhibition | bio
Penelope Gottlieb's work combines both whimsy and contention. Her intensely vibrant, lush, and detailed images confound the viewer's initial impressions, and expectations, of densely decorative work. Upon closer inspection, Gottlieb's pieces contain hidden worlds and competing bodies of imagery. Her large format acrylic and ink paintings, and her complex works on paper, contain beautifully dissonant combinations of highly detailed natural imagery, of illustrative and graphic bombast, and of pop-art introjections. The complexity of the artist's synthesis of these vocabularies results in rich collusive surfaces. We are enticed to return to the picture plane for prolonged exploration. Gottlieb has been widely exhibited in California, and has been featured in prominent international art fairs. The artist is based in Santa Barbara, CA.
