Stuart Sandford
I describe myself as a storyteller. I have always been interested in narratives or history, whether told or hidden. The characters and situations you often see in my work tend to be real, with few exceptions, and this may be because I recreate the moment rather than capture it as it is. Sometimes you can also see things that may not have happened, but they are part of a fantasy or idealization of a situation which to me is just as valid.


Stuart Sandford is a Queer multidisciplinary artist based between London, Los Angeles and Mexico City. Working across (and often combining) different media, including photography, sculpture, painting, moving image, and installation, Sandford is a past Artist in Resident of the Tom of Finland Foundation and has exhibited his work widely in galleries and museums around the world, most notably at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Leslie-Lohman Museum, New York, and Centre de la Photographie, Genève. He was included in the group exhibition, All Together - Works from the Tom of Finland Collection, presented simultaneously at the Studio Cannaregio, Venice, Italy and at the Community Centre, Paris, France. Recent publications include Polaroid Collages (2018-TBA), (2020) and The Best Way to Learn a Foreign Language is in Bed, published by MenOnPaper Art, (2021).
